Rev. Gabriella Velardi Ward, pastor of St. Praxedis Catholic Community of New York, was ordained a Roman Catholic Woman Priest in Boston on July 20, 2008. She has been in active ministry since 1988, twelve of those years in a Roman Catholic parish setting.
In that setting, she taught meditation, contemplative prayer, spirituality, scripture study and feminist theology, among many other ministries. She has been a spiritual director and retreat leader since 1997. She offers spiritual direction and companioning for all but especially for adult survivors of child abuse.
As a Roman Catholic Woman Priest she has extended her ministry to other marginalized and oppressed Catholics. She is the recipient of the Brooklyn Council of Churches Award for Ecumenical Service and the CUNY Women’s Coalition Award for Academic Excellence and Community Service. As an eco-feminist, she has been a justice advocate for the natural world as well as for women, students, children and animals.
Her call to priesthood has led her to five years of study of theology at the Immaculate Conception Seminary and of spirituality in various places including the Cenacle Retreat Houses. She has also studied psychology and the dynamics of trauma. Gabriella has explored other faith traditions and spiritualities including the Episcopal Church, Buddhism and Native American spirituality.
She currently earns her living as an architect and artist. She is the mother of two and the grandmother of eight.
